CMO For DFJ-backed Consumer Mobile Contest's Tapatap

tapatap.png
San Mateo's Taptatap recently raised $2.5M in Series A funding from Gabriel Venture Partners. The company has yet to launch but says it will compete in the mobile consumer social network craze. and will rely on contests. You can view details here.

They are looking for a head of marketing/CMO for whom job 1 will be to build traffic. "Nothing else matters!!!"

The company was co-founded by 3 top Infospace execs, led by CEO Isaac Babbs (your boss) who was GM/VP Mobile Games at Infospace Mobile. Infospace has a terrible reputation but they have great experience so key is to make sure you can trust these guys.

UPDATe: Tapatap gets in touch to clarify that founders of Tapatap previously started a company called Atlas Mobile that we sold to Infospace in July 2004. "In this regard, we were not core Infospace executives nor do we believe there are any issues of trust in our ability to execute." Fair enough.

Tapatap sounds very much like new launches that we have been covering including Kyte.tv and Zannel.

BD VP for SF's Seqouia-backed Flurry

flurry screen grab.gif
Our sister site the a:c recently checked out Flurry and liked what it saw. San Francisco-based Flurry is a pretty simple deal. If you have a crummy cell phone, not a blackberry or some other smart phone, you can create a Flurry account and get free email and RSS. How are they going to cash in you ask? Flurry has an ad supported free version as well as premium services. Sequoia has invested in Flurry.

As it happens, we have have a crappy cell phone and Flurry works fine. Easy to set-up. No need to upgrade to a heavy duty business man's cell phone that creates an unseemly bulge in your pocket.

Flurry got some good reviews in the Web 2.0 rags, but has not overwhelmed with follow-through. They did random deals with NewsIsFree and Goowy Media so we see why they need a BD pro to prioritize.

Can you answer either of these questions:
With a standard 52 card deck, I deal 13 hands of 4 cards. What is the probability that no hand contains a duplicate suit? It is not necessary to reduce your answer to decimal form, but you should attempt to express the result as simply as possible.

When does X + ~X + 1 == 0 ?

Emeryville's WaveMarket has done two rounds from Draper Fisher , Blue Run Ventures (Nokia’s VC outfit), Qualcomm Ventures, and Intel Capital. The service which is currently available through Sprint and Bell Canada, helps adults to keep track of their kids using their GPS equiped cell phones. "Your first task will be to close funding, and get the system operational." Uhh, why not just start a company your-self? The answer is: "This opportunity is not for everyone. Because all initial capital has been put into science and engineering to get the technology product in shape, no one in the company takes a salary yet. Therefore, we are looking for someone whose past success allows them to work without a paycheck for now, instead receiving equity in the company."

W/$65M In Fresh Funding, Boingo Wireless Looks For VP of Engineering

boingo_header_logo.gif It goes without saying that you better know your stuff if you want to sit down with Boingo to talk over their Engineering VP position. This is the big leagues of wireless and venture capital.

Boingo has just raised another $65M from Matsui, NEA and others which brings its total take to nearly $100M. With Google and others offering free metro area Wi-Max, it has seemed to us that expensive wi-fi offerings like Boingo may come under threat, however, we haven't seen Boingo's numbers and their VCs seem cocky about the company's performance.

Oh, and if this sounds interesting, if you get the job, you'll want to start looking for digs around Santa Monica.

Gig For Cell Phone Ad Network In Menlo Park

admob_logo.jpg
AdMob is a pay-per-click marketplace for mobiles. The application debuted in January and has been receiving favorable reviews. It has self-service publisher and advertiser sign-ups that seem to function. The start-up is looking for a Sr. LAMP Developer. They say it’s a contract position “but we are looking to make a full-time offer to the right candidate.”

admob screen grab.jpg

As a full-time position, a gig with AdMob sounds a bit dicey. Google Adsense and the other networks are rolling out mobile ads in a big way. So we think AdMob has a short supply of air in the room.

The start-up is boot-strapped so the obvious question in the interview is where does AdMob stand in terms of financing?
