Spun of out MSFT, SF-Based Social Network Wallop Seeks Engineering VP

wallop.png

With technology that was spun of of Microsoft, pre-launch Wallop is building social networking stuff and needs a VP of Engineering.

Wallop's 38-year old CEO Karl Jacob was CEO of anti-spam startup Cloudmark. He also led Keen, a personal advice community that raised more than $100M from Benchmark Capital, Vulcan Ventures, and Merrill Lynch.

- Although MSFT has long been derided for its lousy Interfaces, Wallop has turned to UI craftsmen Frog Design for this one.

- Along with MSFT, Bay Partners is an investor.

- Jacob's complaint with social networking sites like MySpace is that they become impersonal because they are built around the idea of simply gaining more friends. Wallop has built algorithms that watch personal interactions and then creates a network automatically.

- Wallop does not plan to make money through online advertising, but does not say how it will make money.

Tech VP For Struggling Magazine Reader Zinio

zinio logo.gif
SF-based Zinio has some great venture investors and has had partnerships with magazine developers for years. The trouble is it has had little consumer up-take. It seems folks just don't want to pay to read a magazine online just because they get magazine like formatting. Magazine publishers might not want to know it but there are plenty of other sites for people to get the information or entertainment that they need on the Web.

To Zinio's defense, they say it has delivered 5M digital magazines since 2002 and has seen 154% annual growth in 2006, so maybe they can fight the odds but we would not bet on it.

"Badass" Systems Architect For Funded, Pre-launch SF-based GigantoCorp. - "Riot Nrrrrds a plus"

gigantocorp logo.png
What's a Riot Nrrrd you wonder? Here's the idea:
One day... it'll happen. A bunch of us kept nrrrrds (employed by only one company) will be in a locked, windowless room with a bunch of consultants. The consultants will be babbling incoherently about the "infobahn" "cyberculture" "cyberspace" "surfing tha web" and "interactive marketing." And there will be blunt weapons in that room. And the festivities will begin.

At any rate, this pre-alpha, funded start-up in San Francisco that calls itself GigantoCorp. needs your typical new-age system architect to do Ruby on Rails crap.

Send a resume to matty at gigantocorp dot com

I Write Software/Have $500K/Am Awkward/Be My CEO

Eureka!
"I’m a software engineer with a long resume in the corporate world and startups. I’ve solved a general problem in my area of specialization. It appears that it will be quite profitable to the people who implement it."

But wait, there's more...
"This isn’t just an 'idea for a great web site' idea. It's a real web changing innovation. There is a reasonable 'we sell stuff to businesses for money' method of making money from the innovation, and a model for encouraging adoption. I have a (crude) prototype running. We're about $500,000 from launch, nonengineering costs included. "

But, I can't shake hands and look people in the eye...
"Problem is, I’m not really the best person to start a business of any size. I'm not equipped by temperament to raise money, make business plans, etc. My interpersonal skills are OK by programmer standards, but that's not much recommendation for me running what could rapidly become a large corporation. "

"So, I’m looking for a partner to do the business end of things. You need to have solid real world experience as a manager or exec in an internet business. Experience with i18n would be useful, but not necessary. If you're a potential investor, great, love to talk to you, but don't expect me to give you a slick pitch. This ad is looking for the person who can turn my back of envelope calculations into a real business plan and make that pitch."

"If you're interested, send a resume & cover email with a phone #. Then we can meet, do NDA's, I'll let you know what it's all about, you can tell me about yourself. "

If you're the guy, email gigs-221027199@craigslist.org

VideoEgg Seeks Bad Asses

San Francisco based VideoEgg uses some flowery language in its jobs reqs. Why not, they are hiring in Frisco. The company was recently funded again - this time by Seattle-based Maveron - Starbucks' founder's VC firm.

Software Engineer
"You are a badass C/C++ guru, developing cross-platform client software for handling, editing and uploading video. You pride yourself in finding the elegant solution, work well under pressure and can do the work of 10 with time left to grab a beer after work. Gotta be able to learn new skills and technologies on the fly, architect full solutions from design to implementation, face pointer arithmetic without flinching, deliver product on time with clean code and elegant solutions."

Web Engineer
"Web2.0 maven, building database-driven web apps and supporting tools. Interview W/ Guba, Get An iPod Nano

Guba is a YouTube runner-up that is getting into movie distribution. Based in San Francisco, Guba must be having trouble getting qualified candidates in the door as it boasts of taking resumes with one hand and sticking an iPod in your hand with the other.

"GUBA is offering a free iPod nano to all candidates who successfully complete the interview process.
