Latest Numbers Show Silicon Valley Added 30K Jobs Last Year; Wages Back Up

Joint Venture Silicon Valley says "Silicon Valley is back and its rebooting." Indeed 30K new jobs in a year is significant for a relatively small stretch of land. In 2000, only 2000 new jobs were created. The unemployment rate is now 4% down from 5%.

Moreover, average annual wages were up 4% to $74.302, although they are still down from the high point in 2000 when they hit $86,320.

Also of interest is that most of the job growth comes from smaller companies, rather than your Ciscos and HPs, which have been hiring in other geographies.

You'll have to go to their site to read more as the bastards don't let you copy their job post.

The Career Change From Start-up To Big Co.

Computerworld is running a story that week about entreprenuers who struggle to work in the corporate world. "Have you considered that you aren't cut out to work for others? Entrepreneurs who started and ran companies often face barriers when job hunting because employers may not know where they should fit or believe they wouldn't fare well as employees."

We definately know startup jockeys who are unemployable, on the other hand many good companies seek people who have a DIY ethic and know how to make stuff happen pronto. People who have struggled in the start-up wilderness can also be more appreciative of the perks of big company life and will commit themselves more to their jobs.

Book Review: The No Asshole Rule: "Building a Civilized Workplace and Surviving One That Isn't,"

no asshole.jpg
It's not often that you see a book with the a-word in the title but author Robert Sutton, PhD was able to get his publisher to roll with it for his book: Building a Civilized Workplace and Surviving One That Isn't. Among other things, Sutton dives into the the new management consultant buzzword Total Cost of Assholes (TCA).

"My favorite one is about a company called SuccessFactors, an enterprise software firm in San Mateo. They've been around for almost seven years. Lars Dalgaard is the founder. For the first six and a half years of their existence, they said they had a "no a--hole rule" and had employees sign an agreement that they wouldn't be a--holes. Lars recently came up with a list of the company's accomplishments, including not having hired any a--holes in the first six and a half years. Then they changed the wording from "a--holes" to "jerks" because some of the customers didn't like the language.

Founder Shares or Bust

A friend who founded a tech company many years ago is on the verge of cashing in thanks to an nice IPO. Holding about 1% of company our friend's stock may be worth $3M assuming a strike price of $0 and that the stock will hold up through the lock-out period. Even when you subtract the 40% paid to taxes, that a fantastic and well deserved windfall.

This news stands in stark juxtaposition to the torrent of job descriptions that we read over on sister site tech:gigger where every 2 bit company is dangling pre-IPO stock options as sucker lures. Can we please give up the ghost on this? Start-ups should promise good pay and very significant portions of ownership or talent should walk.

eWeek has put together a list of the 10 programming languages you should learn right now. At the risk of sounding un-grateful, eWeek can save its breath. Here's the list:

1. PHP
2. C#
3. AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML)
4. JavaScript
5. Perl
6. C
7. Ruby and Ruby on Rails

HP's Shame Reminds Us Why Talent Joins Start-ups

hp logo.png
We have heard from a number of people who are not surprised to learn that HP spied on its board members, as well as tech journalists. Big company execs often get to the top by being more sinister than others. We believe this is one of the top reasons that talent flows to start-ups were people feel they are out of reach from the kinds of freaks who control HP.
