Engineering VP For Zvents in San Mateo
VC-backed zVents says it currently has about 40 people on the payroll and is looking to hire a VP of events to run the show. Based in San Mateo, Zvents is backed by VantagePoint, Red Rock, and NetService Ventures. They have done BD deals to power local search for the Boston Globe, Denver Post, and Orange County Register among others.
One of the company's founders is listed as Chief Architect and it has a CTO so definition of roles will be a priority.

VP Engineering: Zvents
Local search engine Zvents is seeking a vice president of engineering to join and lead its outstanding technology team.
Company: Zvents is a market-focused company committed to delivering a compelling experience to its users and great value to its media partners and advertisers. Our organic traffic is growing rapidly, and we power local search experiences for a growing set of major media properties such as the Boston Globe, Denver Post, and Orange County Register. We are passionate about revolutionizing the local search and discovery experience, an area which we believe to be in its infancy. We expect to be the dominant player in a fast-growing market sector with billions of dollars of advertising and the attention of tens of millions of consumers at stake. Role: Lead all engineering development, release, QA, and operations for our local search web service; work with separate Product Management function to define functionality and build code to meet business and user needs; work with CTO to enact his overall technical vision for the company. Reports to CEO.
Experience: At least 10 years, of which three or more are in a significant and senior management role at a consumer-facing web service. Large-scale data-driven sites or large-scale web search experiences (including vertical search) strongly preferred. Previous management or oversight of development, QA, release, and 24/7 data center operations required. Experience in content aggregation a plus. Startup background a bonus but not required.
Capabilities: Deep understanding of software engineering principles and processes; strong computer science fundamentals; past hands-on experience designing and developing large software systems. Ability to lead code and architecture reviews of key system components, and make or lead critical decisions about performance/time/risk tradeoffs. Proven ability to be the key manager, advocate, and champion of engineering within the company. Ability to commit to delivery dates and goals which meet the company’s business needs, and successfully manage the code creation process and engineering team to hit those dates and goals. Exceptional interpersonal communication skills; must be a great listener, an inclusive and decisive leader of engineers, and great senior management team member.
Team: Within a company of about 40, Zvents currently has a largely senior engineering, operations, and QA team of fifteen. This role will manage that engineering/ops/QA team, and act as a member of the senior management team of the company. For more, see: http://www.zvents.com/support/management
Platform: Zvents is based on major open-source components including Linux, Apache, MySQL, Tomcat, and SOLR. Our front end is developed in Ruby on Rails, and much of our search core is Java. We are committed to open source and are in the process of sponsoring a major C++-based search-related project. We use a variety of languages for specific tasks and are pragmatic about their application.
