Spun of out MSFT, SF-Based Social Network Wallop Seeks Engineering VP
With technology that was spun of of Microsoft, pre-launch Wallop is building social networking stuff and needs a VP of Engineering.
Wallop's 38-year old CEO Karl Jacob was CEO of anti-spam startup Cloudmark. He also led Keen, a personal advice community that raised more than $100M from Benchmark Capital, Vulcan Ventures, and Merrill Lynch.
- Although MSFT has long been derided for its lousy Interfaces, Wallop has turned to UI craftsmen Frog Design for this one.
- Along with MSFT, Bay Partners is an investor.
- Jacob's complaint with social networking sites like MySpace is that they become impersonal because they are built around the idea of simply gaining more friends. Wallop has built algorithms that watch personal interactions and then creates a network automatically.
- Wallop does not plan to make money through online advertising, but does not say how it will make money.

• Educated to at least a college degree level, the ideal candidate is most likely to possess a bachelors degree in computer science, ideally with a post-graduate qualification in technology.
• Experience in managing the development of internet applications is essential. PRIOR DEMONSTRATED TRACK-RECORD IN DELIVERING CONSUMER INTERNET PRODUCTS ON-TIME, ON-BUDGET AND ON-EXPECTATION IS ALSO ESSENTIAL.
• Proven ability to build and run a high performance software development organization. An experienced and credible manager of the software development process who is able to accurately set aggressive development targets and galvanize a team in the shared endeavor of working towards tight deadlines.
• A clear, coherent and rational thinker adept at establishing efficient, disciplined and optimal processes and methodologies.
• A willing and clear communicator, both downstream and upstream, including at Board Level.
• The ability to relate customer demand to product features and specifications is essential.
• Big company ‘polish’ is important, but evidence of having lived through the growing pains of a high-growth organization is essential.
• A creative thinker who is not afraid to conceive new ideas of how business can be done and to present and promote such ideas.
• Strong track record of project managing to time and budget.
