Position Description:
We are seeking an outstanding Software Engineer to build out Next Style's technology platform. As one of the first technical hires, you will drive strategic technical initiatives, help shape the development culture, and own large sections of the codebase. This position will expose you to a wide range of challenges, with significant financial and career development upside.
The successful candidate will be a self-starter, have a good balance of technical and communication skills, and possess a flexible, positive attitude. You are expected to have substantial experience as a web application developer and/or tech lead, and you must be excited about building a new application, team, and company from the ground up.
Position Responsibilities:
* Work with the Product Manager and users to collect and digest requirements
* Design features with an emphasis on usability, elegance, and simplicity
* Iteratively develop and release features and enhancements at a rapid pace
* Write and maintain sufficient documentation, unit tests, and functional tests
* Work proficiently at all layers of the development stack, from SQL to AJAX
* Help define and enforce conventions, best practices, architecture, and team culture
Qualifications:
* BS/BA in CS or equivalent
* 3+ years work experience in web application development; startup experience is preferred
* Experience with at least one of the following: Ruby, Java, Python, PHP; preferably using a modern object-relational mapping tool (e.g., Rails ActiveRecord, Hibernate) and an MVC framework (e.g., Rails ActionPack, Struts)
* Experience with a major, production-quality SQL database; PostgreSQL experience is preferred
* Understanding of standard development practices, including use of source control to manage multiple branches of development, QA and bug-fixing processes, automated unit testing, and other basic software engineering tools and techniques
* Strong understanding of object-oriented design and other software engineering fundamentals
* Organized, self-sufficient worker with a disciplined, analytical approach to problem solving
* Strong verbal and written communication skills
* Bonus points for other skills, such as UNIX system adminstration or usability/UI design
