New Orleans' Turbo Squid Seeks CFO and VP

Turbo Squid sells 3D Models and 3D Application plug-ins via its web site, and has recently entered the computer game industry with its new division, GameFlood.com. The New Orleans-based company is venture backed (two rounds), 6 years old, and currently staffed with 30 employees. It claims over $5M in sales this year.
Turbo Squid is spending it 2nd funding round now by expanding its management team and brining on a CFO and VP.
If this is you, please send your CV to jobs@turbosquid.com, with "CFO" or "VP" in the subject line.
The work is challenging; the team is bright. It's a chance to be a part of the New Orleans recovery, but to work for a company that could be anywhere. The company's original business is supplying a platform and marketplace to the 3D artist community. On the selling side, thousands of 3D artists upload and publish their work as "stock 3D" products, much like how Getty Images sells stock photography. On the buying side are a million registered members who purchase the files with credit cards and complete the transaction by downloading the products. Of the money that flows into its bank account from these electronic processes, Turbo Squid takes 50% of the sale price and pays the rest out as a monthly royalty to the artists.
GameFlood.com is our newly launched division. It leverages our 3D artist community on a new platform with the intent to (please pardon the comparison) become the YouTube or MySpace of the games world. With our extensive 3D artist membership and the recent Louisiana law granting a 20% tax credit subsidy on game development in the state, Turbo Squid is in a unique position to succeed.
As our CFO, some of the challenges you'll face are:
• Owning the entire financial operations of the company
• Driving the finance portion of any future VC funding rounds and helping negotiate term sheets
• Extending our real-time sales forecasts into real-time projected financial statements
• Mentoring, collaborating with, and sharing experiences with the senior accountant and staff
• Helping to complete Turbo Squid's transition from an efficient start-up into an efficient, but scalable corporation. Implementing enough controls and bureaucracy to streamline work and safeguard financial processes, but knowing intuitively when to get rid of out-of-date or ineffective policies.
• Coordinating the preparation of financial statements, financial reports, forecasting, special analyses, and information reports.
• ...and without meaning to sound flip, the rest of the usual yada yada for a CFO.
We're looking for a candidate with:
• Demonstrable c-level communication and presentation skills
• 10 years of experience in a senior-level finance or accounting position
• VC fundraising experience, background in finance preferred
• Experience on both sides of M&A transactions
• Tech company experience and passion
• Distinguished academic achievement, CPA preferred
• An interest in philosophical discussions both about work and the world in general
Compensation includes competitive salary, 401k match, stock options, health care contributions, 15 days of paid time off and 9 company holidays.
As our VP of BizDev, some of the challenges you’ll face are:
• Developing business deals with game publishers for add-on content integration with existing and/or upcoming game titles to monetize the 3rd party content community.
• Proposing strategic relationships to game publishers for community integration with GameFlood
• Negotiating with console manufacturers to be a partner in their community and user generated content plays
• Collaborating with Marketing and product visionaries within the company to forge overall strategic plans
• Meeting with the board of directors to communicate strategies and prospective deals
• Managing hiring and evaluation of game production staff to execute development of proprietary game content and platform in support of GameFlood.com
• Working with industry partners such as Autodesk and Microsoft to maximize the value of our relationships
We’re looking for a candidate with:
• Demonstrable c-level communication and presentation skills
• 2-3 years of sales and/or business development experience with a traditional game publisher such as Electronic Arts, Activision, Microsoft, Vivendi, Sega, Sony, Atari, Ubisoft, Midway, Namco, etc.
• A strong Rolodex
• 20-25% travel required to close key opportunities and attend 2–4 industry events per year
• Deep knowledge of the games industry and great intuition about gamer consumer behavior, perhaps gained through retail experience
• A desire to spend time in the New Orleans area, but not necessarily to relocate. Because of the non-specific location of the games industry, cities like Boston, Los Angeles, New York, Orlando and other areas may be preferable.
• An interest in philosophical discussions both about work and the world in general
Turbo Squid Inc is an equal-opportunity employer.
Headquarters: Turbo Squid Inc, 400 Poydras Street, Suite 1500, New Orleans LA 70130 USA

You'll handle product marketing, and will work closely with the founder who oversees the sales function.
We're looking for someone who has worked at a senior level in marketing a product to consumers as well as marketing for the distribution side, ideally with a product that is a mix of consumer and industrial. You understand every aspect of marketing, from collateral to strategy. You are a solid, roll-up-your-sleeves contributor with a passion for getting a revolutionary idea off the ground in the best strategic way possible, and you never let ego get in the way of getting things done.

Book Review: The No Asshole Rule: "Building a Civilized Workplace and Surviving One That Isn't,"

It's not often that you see a book with the a-word in the title but author Robert Sutton, PhD was able to get his publisher to roll with it for his book: Building a Civilized Workplace and Surviving One That Isn't. Among other things, Sutton dives into the the new management consultant buzzword Total Cost of Assholes (TCA).
"My favorite one is about a company called SuccessFactors, an enterprise software firm in San Mateo. They've been around for almost seven years. Lars Dalgaard is the founder. For the first six and a half years of their existence, they said they had a "no a--hole rule" and had employees sign an agreement that they wouldn't be a--holes. Lars recently came up with a list of the company's accomplishments, including not having hired any a--holes in the first six and a half years. Then they changed the wording from "a--holes" to "jerks" because some of the customers didn't like the language.

BD VP for SF's Seqouia-backed Flurry

Our sister site the a:c recently checked out Flurry and liked what it saw. San Francisco-based Flurry is a pretty simple deal. If you have a crummy cell phone, not a blackberry or some other smart phone, you can create a Flurry account and get free email and RSS. How are they going to cash in you ask? Flurry has an ad supported free version as well as premium services. Sequoia has invested in Flurry.
As it happens, we have have a crappy cell phone and Flurry works fine. Easy to set-up. No need to upgrade to a heavy duty business man's cell phone that creates an unseemly bulge in your pocket.
Flurry got some good reviews in the Web 2.0 rags, but has not overwhelmed with follow-through. They did random deals with NewsIsFree and Goowy Media so we see why they need a BD pro to prioritize.

Seattle's Blog Platform Wet Paint Seeks a Few Good Techs

We really like the UI of WetPaint, but I guess we are wrong as they are looking to hire a UI Designer and Info Architect, along with several other positions.
Wetpaint was founded in 2005 and is headquartered in Seattle's historic Pioneer Square. The company is backed with $5M by Trinity Ventures and Frazier Technology Ventures.
WetPaint has a sad origin: "Where did the idea for Wetpaint come from? It came from a friend who not that long ago was diagnosed with cancer. After the initial shock wore off, he did what most of us would do: He went online to learn everything he could.
He found lots of facts, but not the stuff he really wanted to know — like how were other people with this type of cancer coping? How did they deal with the treatments? Who were the best doctors? What were the things you don't learn at the clinic?
Sitting helplessly on the sidelines of our friend's dilemma, it dawned on us: Why not come up with a way to make it easy to share information like this about anything: health, jobs, world events, or hobbies? Why not create websites where real people with real experience would become the experts and inspire others to contribute?"

It competes with a number of other fashion/worldly posssion sites like Wists, Like.com, etc. Stylefinder looks fine but it gets no traffic. Thus they are looking for a marketing/bd guy or gal to hook them up. It's a husband and wife team that runs the shop. Wife is French. Sounds dicey, but what do we know.

"Badass" Systems Architect For Funded, Pre-launch SF-based GigantoCorp. - "Riot Nrrrrds a plus"

What's a Riot Nrrrd you wonder? Here's the idea:
One day... it'll happen. A bunch of us kept nrrrrds (employed by only one company) will be in a locked, windowless room with a bunch of consultants. The consultants will be babbling incoherently about the "infobahn" "cyberculture" "cyberspace" "surfing tha web" and "interactive marketing." And there will be blunt weapons in that room. And the festivities will begin.
At any rate, this pre-alpha, funded start-up in San Francisco that calls itself GigantoCorp. needs your typical new-age system architect to do Ruby on Rails crap.
Send a resume to matty at gigantocorp dot com
