YouTube: Hollywood North
With all the hype surrounding YouTube, we expected to see more activity on the company's job board -- but it's slim pickings. The San Mateo-based video site only lists 3 positions:
-Software Engineer
-System Architect
-Senior Web Developer
The Senior Web Developer listing poses the following question: "Are you an ardent disciple of Eric Meyer? A CSS Ninja looking for his next kill? Then we want you to join our team as a Senior Web Developer!"
Eric Meyer? Never heard of him. We'll stick to our day jobs.

Force10 From Navarone, er San Jose
![]()
The name-sake of Force10 Networks is the 1978 WW2 thrilled Force 10 From Navarone staring Harrison Ford in an early role.

We first profiled Force 10 back in March '05 and noted then that we hadn't "thought about Gigabit Ethernet in a while (thank God), but our review of Force10 reminds us of the riches that await those who break into the networking space with a promising technology and the right management." Though it hasn't been able to stage an IPO yet, Force 10 seems to still be attracting big dollars -- the company just raised another $50M and is hiring geeks like it's 1999.
Force 10 has over 75 job listings at its site -- most are in engineering and based at HQ in homely San Jose, CA. They also seem to have an outpost in Chennai, India. Never been, but it can't be much worse that San Jose. Job-seeker advice: ask to see the numbers before you sign up for this one -- Force 10 needs to have good revenue coming in the door.

Tech Start-up Compensation On The Rise
If you have an good pedigree as a start-up exec, it is looking like you can call the shots these day. Experts in tech start-up recruiting say that typical executive compensation can now amount to up to $250K annually, plus an equity stake of 8 to 12% in a VC backed start-up. At the VP level, VC-funded start-up candidates are seeing offers at $175K to $200K. More experienced candidates, however, may opt for less cash and up to 15 to 17% of equity. Of course these numbers vary depending on the stage of the start-up.
Execs running divisions of large companies such as Microsoft, Sun, Oracle, or Hewlett-Packard are not as popular as those who have run startups, the experts say.
Demand for a smaller pool of in-demand execs means that VCs and board members are taking longer than they were before to find the right candidate. About a year ago, the Laurel Group says it was averaging about 55 days to find a CEO. Now the search can take 120 days. “Candidates have multiple offers which are much more competitive. “We’re not seeing executive relocation because there is so much in their backyard,” said Laurel.

Yahoo/eBay/MSFT Bigs Keep Leaving for Start-ups
We keep seeing posts about how highly paid big tech company execs are leaving Yahoo, Microsoft, Amazon and eBay for start-ups:
"After six years at Yahoo, including a stint as VP of the company's successful online shopping business, Rob Solomon wanted a new challenge. Last year, he was offered the job of CEO at Internet travel start-up SideStep Inc. Although he would have profited from some stock options had he stayed at Yahoo, he accepted the position starting in January. His cash compensation this year will be a 10th of what he earned at Yahoo."
"In the last year, in addition to Solomon, Yahoo lost Geoff Ralston, its chief product officer; Mike Murphy, a regional ad-sales manager; and John Robison, a veteran engineer, among others. EBay, meanwhile, lost Lynn Reedy, its senior vice president of product; Gil Penchina, a regional manager; Chief Technology Officer Maynard Webb; and Senior Vice President Michael Dearing. Last month, Jeff Jordan, president of eBay's PayPal electronic payments business and regarded by some as an heir apparent to eBay CEO Meg Whitman, said he is resigning."

NY Observer Seeks Online VP/GM
The New York Observer is looking for someone to head up their online division. We understand that management at this quirky NY print newspaper is quirky itself. However, there seems like plenty of upside here. Traffic to the site today is very low in contrast to NY blogs like Gothamist. The paper has a loyal audience and there is no reason why this cannot translate online.

Seattle Angel Seeks Co-founders
Paul the Seattle Angel says he will pony up the first $100K and he's looking for biz partners. Here are the details:
Seeking to establish a ‘founders’ group to collaborate in the launch and build-out of a new enterprise.
Scenario: 3 to 5 individuals of like mind will pool their skills to conceive, plan, fund, launch, build-out, and manage a new business.
Concept: Open – I have plenty of ideas but I’m open to yours. We will decide on opportunity and feasibility together. This may be the chance to realize your perfect idea.
Skill Set: This is largely dependant on the requirements of the final plan but a group that represents sales ability; finance and accounting; legal, tech and web design/development; marketing and promotion; imagination and commitment is a good way to begin. Key determinants – ability and compatibility.
To apply, email comments
Timeline: Depending on the rate of qualified respondents, I would like to select the team within 30 days and move directly to brainstorming, research, business plan and execution. We should look to present for funding or independently launch within 120 days.
Commitments: Once we find each other, an appropriate business structure, equity splits and employment agreements will be defined.
Location: This is in and around Seattle for the benefit of face-time but geography is generally open. I’m comfortable with the possibility of a virtual office operation.
Funding: I am willing to back the right team and plan with up to $100K. Hopefully, you will be able to put some skin in the game but sweat equity is an option and the right personality and talent will not be disqualified for lack of cash. Of course, we will need more than my contribution so Angel connections or other financing ability is a definite plus.
Compensation: revenue dependant executive salaries, benefits, and equity.
Personal Profile: I am a semi-retired business exec with the desire to get back into action. My work history is mostly media related. I have owned and managed - radio stations, a record and video label, and a film company. I have held executive roles in public and private companies (mostly private). General skills: experienced and capable in most aspects of management and operations, marketing, promotion, and advertising.
Contact: This is no hustle. I’m serious so let’s not waste anyone’s time. Let’s begin with an email reply (as brief or as broad as you choose) indicating your skill set and possible areas of contribution. Attach a resume if you like. All correspondence will be kept completely confidential. I will respond with a follow-up call.
Thanks for your interest and hope to hear from you.

Angel Seeks Web 2.0 Video Start-up Co-Founder/CEO
In the tradition of 'rock singer seeks drummer' a Silicon Valley exec and angel is looking for an experienced entreprenuer to co-found a company. Here are the details:
I am an angel investor based in Silicon Valley. I am looking for an entrepreneur that can take an idea I have in the online video space, and launch a start-up with it.
My role would be that of an active investor --I will make a small seed investment to get things off the ground, help shape the idea, the product strategy, go to market plan, etc. The entrepreneur would be the founder, CEO and have majority ownership – this would be their company.
I am currently actively involved in the Consumer Internet space. I am ideally looking to work with an engineer that has a good understanding of the Web 2.0 space and trends. I am not looking for years and years of experience nor is it a requirement that you should have done a start-up before. Strong technical skills and a passion for building a successful company are key. Here are some specific criteria I have in mind:
• Engineering degree in computer science; skills to build an online video sharing site from scratch
• Will work with first time entrepreneurs
• Based in the Bay Area
• High level of personal integrity
I realize that this post leaves many questions un-answered. If you want, please reply, tell me a bit about yourself, and we can continue the dialogue from there.
Sound cool? Send your resume and cover letter to Techgigger.

W/$65M In Fresh Funding, Boingo Wireless Looks For VP of Engineering
It goes without saying that you better know your stuff if you want to sit down with Boingo to talk over their Engineering VP position. This is the big leagues of wireless and venture capital.
Boingo has just raised another $65M from Matsui, NEA and others which brings its total take to nearly $100M. With Google and others offering free metro area Wi-Max, it has seemed to us that expensive wi-fi offerings like Boingo may come under threat, however, we haven't seen Boingo's numbers and their VCs seem cocky about the company's performance.
Oh, and if this sounds interesting, if you get the job, you'll want to start looking for digs around Santa Monica.

GM Needed For Intnl Travel Site Vayama
Vayama is a Mountain View start-up spawned by Airtrade International, an online travel company focused on international travel. The company is a fully owned subsidiary of BCD NV in the Netherlands, parent company to a large corporate travel management company in the US, BCD Travel.
International travel ticketing is indeed a business that is not done well by the likes of Expedia. And we like the fact that Airtrade is doing a spin-off in Mountain View to carry this plan out.

Vayama's new offices are in the Atrium building at 1975 West El Camino Real in Mountain View.

Want Interview W/Stanford PhD Start-up? Crack These Puzzlers

Aster Data Systems is a stealth-mode Palo Alto start-up looking for engineers for a scalable analytics platform that will run on large distributed systems. To get an interview, you need to know how to answer these questions, good luck.
Question 1
Write a header file "keywords.h" such that the program specified by the source files below has the intended behavior. Be sure not to violate the One Definition Rule. Elegant solutions preferred.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
// File call-foo.cpp

{
std::cout << "called with foo keyword" << std::endl;
}
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
// File call-bar.cpp

void call( KEYWORD(bar) );
int main()
{

Question 2
When considering Redo, Undo, and Undo-Redo recovery schemes, which of the following are true and why:
[a] Undo requires pinning of disk blocks in memory, redo and undo-redo do not.
[b] Redo requires more memory buffers per transaction than undo-redo logging.
What is the minimum, average and maximum number of times a key can appear in a B+ tree?
Question 3
Assume you want to design a distributed hashtable that can store pairs and supports key lookup: given a it returns the corresponding with (of course) blazingly high performance.
Asserting that complexity is the root of all evils, you decide to use a static function to map keys to IP addresses. Thus, given a , clients of the system could issue the appropriate request to the mapped IP address in order to store a pair or retrieve a based on the supplied .
State what are some fundamental limitations/problems with this design. In which situations you expect it to perform well and in which to perform bad?

Ariana Huffington: Rich Lady W/$5M F/Softbank To Hire in LA/NYC 4 Her Blog

HuffPost Gets Mad Traffic
Softbank's recent $5M investment in Huffington Post is a bit controversial. Why does the company need the money? What kind of return can VCs really expect? What happens when the internet ad market comes back down to earth? Who cares if you are employed there and the company is conservative with its cash - but that remains to be seen. PE Wire which has seen the company's financials says it is not yet profitable. With all the hires HuffPost is making that is going to make it even harder.
If we were young and really into media, HuffPost would be a fun place to work we think. But is it the smartest place to get a good return on stock? Absolutely not.
